Welcome!!

IF YOU ARE NEW TO WATERCOLOUR, here's what I recommend

Please give yourself the best shot you can to

create a painting you can hang on your wall

ART SUPPLY INVESTMENT PRIORITY

  1. Professional grade PAINT TUBES are most important

  2. Watercolour paper either Fabriano artistico or Bockingford

  3. you can get away with a range of sizes of cheap brushes
ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES - SUBSTITUTES ARE NOT RECOMMENDED

Paint - TUBE paints only please

Artist Quality (14ml or 5ml) - ESSENTIAL
Recommended Brands: Winsor & Newton or Schmincke
  • Winsor blue (red shade) OR Winsor blue (green shade) OR French Ultramarine
  • New Gamboge OR Indian Yellow OR Transparent yellow
  • Permanent Alizarin Crimson OR Permanent Rose
  • Burnt Sienna OR light Red OR brown madder

Choose 1 of each primary plus Burnt sienna and you'll be set - you’ll be able to mix every colour and tone imaginable using these pigments.

Cotton Rag Watercolour Paper - essential

Fabriano Artistico, 300gsm, CP, 100% cotton rag, full sheet 76x56cm – 1 sheet

practice or student papers are not suitable, they don't have the same structure as watercolour cotton rag paper, therefore don't behave the same way. If you want to try for similar results to me, buy Fabriano Artistico

show the sales assistant this barcode so they don't sell you something stupid

Brushes

The best watercolour brushes are very soft natural bristle. You can paint all your work with just 4 brushes and they will last many years if properly cared for:
  1. Essential - the fattest round soft bristled brush with a good point OR flat 1" inch wash brush
  2. Medium and small round with soft bristles
  3. Rigger
  4. 2 inch hake

SUBSTITUTES ARE NOT RECOMMENDED

Quality Guarantee: All my watercolours are painted with only modern professional grade watercolour paints on Museum exhibition grade watercolour papers, they are extremely lightfast and will become a family heirloom and passed down to subsequent generations. ALL art of ANY medium should be hung away from direct sunlight. Ifproperly cared for, watercolour paintings will last as long, if not longer, than oil paintings. I only paint on 100% cotton rag paper, mostly Arches and Fabriano, and frame to conservation standard with acid free materials.
